Reinforced Polyurethane Foam (RPF)

3M (St. Paul, Minn.) introduced 3M™ Reinforced Polyurethane Foam, billed as a lightweight and rot-resistant alternative to plywood for use in structural and semi-structural applications.

The polyurethane foam boards with fiberglass reinforcement offer “high strength” in applications including marine, transportation and general construction, with a weight savings ranging from 30% to 60% versus plywood, the company says.

The product is available in five densities ranging from 15 lbs. to 26 lbs. per cubic foot, and is sold in 4-foot by 8-foot sheets.

Unlike plywood, which can chip or pop loose during construction, the company says its foam material can be shaped with tools and secured to substrates with screws.

The product also is reported to be characterized by low moisture content, resulting in enhanced adhesion.

Fiberglass Panels

Our panel processes are as varied as the uses for these structural panels. We offer panels laminated with almost any type of veneer for the cosmetic finish you are looking for, as well as pultruded fiberglass panels with a multitude of finishing options such as gel coat, polyurea, or paint. Coring options don’t stop with structural honeycombs, we can also make panels with balsawood, PET foam, PVC foam, or Polyurethane foam. Standard panel size is 4’ x 8’ but custom panels can be made up to 10’ x 50’.

Polypropylene Honeycomb 8mm

The nidaplast honeycombs are cellular structures with an 8 mm mesh made of polypropylene, which are used to form the core of structural sandwich panels. Their surface coating (non-woven polyester) can be laminated or glued to practically any type of material, for applications in many domains: construction, transport, yachting, industrial equipment, sports, recreation, etc..

Nidaplast® 8: Standard product of the range. Specially made for contact and spray lamination. The polyester non-woven material present on the nidaplastâ 8 has a surface that is perfectly suited to impregnation with thermosetting resins (polyester, epoxy, etc.) The heat sealing method used to stick this non-woven material to the cellular structure provides a perfect bond. Finally, the plastic film placed under the non-woven material seals the cells and reduces resin consumption. Naval authorisation certificate issued by DNV. Germanischer Lloyd certificate.

Balsa Core (Rigid Panel & Scored Panel)

One side of the Balsa Core Flexible panel features a fiberglass fabric scrim while the other side features razor thin cuts length ways and width ways to create small blocks. This allows the panel to contour around curved surfaces and provide the ultimate flexible panel. Scrim allows a larger bonding area between the core and the laminate. This increase in bonding area results in excellent skin to core adhesion which is necessary to provide high quality sandwich products.

Because of its low weight balsa wood represents a good core material solution when low weight is required.

When a resistant composite material is needed, balsa wood core material is a suitable solution due to the great comparison between low density and high compressive and shear resistance.

Luan Panel Nidaplast8 (H8pp)

Nidaplast is a polypropylene honeycomb covered or not on both faces with a soft polyester non-woven fabric. It is available in 2500 x 1200 mm plates ready for direct use: lamination or gluing, shaping. Thicknesses varied from 5 to 90 mm (or more).
This flexible and light panel enables an easy use in sandwich panels where most usual techniques of cutting, laminating and gluing can be applied. Since it is a thermoplastic product, its mechanical, acoustic, chemical and thermal properties make its use even easier.
Its surfaces are well adapted for the lamination or the gluing of almost any type of facings. There are many applications in a lot of different fields: building, transport, nautical industry, industrial equipment…

BOAT BUILDING:

Our products have very good acoustic absorption properties in addition to their lightness and resistance. They also are appreciated in the yachting sector thanks to the following advantages:
The polypropylene is viscoelastic and absorbs most of the vibrations. Thus the background sound level generated by the engine and the displacement is reduced. We suggest technical solutions and offer different honeycombs dedicated to marine applications:

A panel with a nidaplast and polyester skins is a good solution to save 5kg/m2 compared to a traditional plywood : more than 50% of its initial weight. In a rigid trailer oof 13mm, it is possible to save more than 500kg/trailer.
